Back from China

China KSKA Presentation Poster

Mitz and I traveled in China for two weeks, spending time in Hong Kong, Yunnan and Guangdong Provences.  We spent some of our time in very rural communities, ate traditional food, and slept in traditional homes on rock hard beds.  This trip lived up to the adage that “The creation of great photographs is often inversely proportional to your level of comfort”.

From the mountainous landscapes to the terraced agricultural fields, we found the land use very similar to what one might expect 100 years ago.  Rural China is full of men and women who do the majority of the labor as they carry on their backs large woven baskets full of everything from grain to fertilizer.  China’s farmland is in stark contrast to its seemingly modern cities where glass and steel buildings tower over vehicle clogged streets and back alley markets where meat, vegetables and fruit is sold from makeshift stalls.

China is a distant and different land where we needed to navigate our way through every day, every mode of transportation,  and each meal.  It was not an easy trip but one we will remember always.  I hope you agree that the images speak for themselves.  -Clark

A few weeks back we had the privilege of being featured on KTUU evening news in The Bottom Line feature. Reporter Rhonda McBride and her film man came over to interview Clark and discuss how the book; Anchorage Life at the Edge of the Frontier came to be. It also includes some behind the scenes interviews with other key individuals such as Mitzi Mishler who’s role help shape the book. You can read the article on KTUU’s website or check out some of the books spreads at Yes Alaska Press site.
